TOC Tutorial Section

On the main TOC page, under Tutorials, it has:

What are we gonna do with the first two?
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 08:17, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Um... I can't really think of any main groups. :/
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 09:24, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
Lol, I was wondering that too xD
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 05:18, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
Bureaucrat come here and tell us what to do :3
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 08:33, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
Hey guys we need to cut the tutorials into sections. So one could math tutorials and two could be program tutorials or whatever you want.
Dazman (talk | contribs) 14:23, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
I likez. :D
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 03:02, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
I likez. :D
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 03:39, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
Can we do this?
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 05:25, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
Yes... Yes we can. *Plays Dramatic Music*
Dazman (talk | contribs) 05:56, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
I think we're supposed to get the go-ahead first xD
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:04, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
Lucario doesn't seem to be coming on the wiki very often :/
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 06:34, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Weird... We need someone active to be our leader. I elect Johnathan.
Dazman (talk | contribs) 08:02, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Lucario'd be fine if he came on more :) I'd elect WeirdF :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 08:29, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Lol, rebellion time once more xD *brandishes poisoned spear* Muahahaha! Nah, I vote WeirdF :P
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 08:31, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
But Lucario's an okay leader - he just needs to come on more :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 10:25, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

In case you're forgetting, "voting" isn't going to do anything. Only bureaucrats can make people bureaucrats, and they're not going to make any of us for some reason, we already found out. Also, I admit it may be unfair, but all we've learnt from rebellion and mutiny is that they always have the upper hand, they have more power. I appreciate you guys voting for me as well, but to be honest I don't know why you'd want me. If there was a vote, I'd agree with Dazman and vote for Jonathan (no offence to you Chris, in my eyes you're equal, so the deciding factor had to be the edit count). However, I do agree that we need bureaucrats on more often.

Also, this is kind of off topic, if this needs to be discussed maybe it should be under a separate title on the CP.
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 10:50, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

Hmm. I can see this has gotten out of hand :P. I am active, viewing the recent changes and stuff, but sometimes I'm still deciding what to say. It's not easy. Anyway, I don't want to pick specifically two of he sections, for example Animation and Scripting, over the others, but at the same time there's no really other ways to do it. So I think our two possible solutions are: 1) Have somebody randomly curate two of the categories each week, sort of like "Featured Image" or "Featured Article", or 2) Pick just two and keep it that way. Perhaps the ones with the most tutorials. What do you guys think? Those are just my personal favorite solutions of course... if you guys have any other ideas, please say :)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 15:48, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
I think we should keep two always, and I think it should be Math and Scripting. These will be the ones that people will need the most, and there are more of them than any other tutorial.
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 17:55, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
I agree with WeirdF :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 22:55, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Wait does this mean that we have the "Okay" to keep working on the TOC Tutorials? I want to add my idea for the tutorials section: Tutorials > List of Tutorial Types (Or something like that) > Math Tutorials.
Dazman (talk | contribs) 22:46, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
Both me and lucario are online often. He asked me about my oppinion on this the day before yesterday already I think. I have exams now and that's why I'm not really active. I hope you understand that.
Ok on to the question :p You can do whatever you want for the ToC. I really appreciate all the work you put into it. The ToC we have there is a working draft, it changes continuously. You just do what you think is best and if someone doesn't like it, just post on the talk page of the ToC. (a lot easier then all these messages on the community portal...) . While making changes, try to follow these 'ToC goals' :)
  • easy to explore As opposed to the search function, the ToC should make it appealing to explore different aspects of Scratch rather than finding stuff you are looking for.
  • tree structure try to divide into *useful* subcategories when lists are getting too long. Don't use too many though.
  • use images where possible. Not that every single link needs an image, but for example, it might be good to give every subcategory an image. It helps making it more appealing.
It might also be good to join some pages we already have and link to anchors instead of individual pages. It keeps a better overview.
[[Scratch Wiki:Table of Contents/Website#Forums]]
For example I think the way the website category is currently set up is very confusing. I've changed the 'tuturials' section on the toc main page, it links to anchors in the tutorials page. This is because there is no seperate page for each type of tutorials, which is good. When we have more we might want to split the tutorial page up into smaller pages. I think the links on the tutorial main page have to link to anchors when each subcategory does not have its own page, otherwise link to that page. There are cases in which we clearly did it wrong. Scratch_Wiki:Table_of_Contents/Forums Has a two categories listed, including 'Forum Categories', however, when I click on Forum Categories here Scratch_Wiki:Table_of_Contents/Website It brings me to a separate page for it. That's extremely confusing...
JSO (talk | contribs) 00:42, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

Uh... *posts to show that I've read this*
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 04:48, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
Same ^_^
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 04:54, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
Ditto.
Dazman (talk | contribs) 06:02, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
Likewise! :P
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 08:05, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

haha :p
JSO (talk | contribs) 12:18, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Subcategories of Tutorials

There are getting to be quite a lot of tutorials now... I think we should sub-categorise them like in the TOC. What does everyone else think?
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 10:00, December 16, 2010

Yeah, that would be good... it'll make things neater, and there are many different types of tutorials anyway.
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 10:46, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
More opinions people :|
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 05:19, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
No more opinions... should we just go with your idea then?
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 22:04, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
Nah, let's wait for right now, we should give everyone more time...
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 22:06, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
I think it would be good :D
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 04:32, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
Why can't we have active and dedicated bureaucrats that come on every day >_>
And Lucario, don't come saying that you simply didn't know what to post xD
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 05:19, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Maybe because I have exams and I am basically studying all the time. I think it's kind of obvious that the tutorials should be sub categorized in the same categories as we use in the ToC.
JSO (talk | contribs) 12:14, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Okay I'll get right on it...
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 13:02, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Done! All categories created and all the categories in the articles have been changed... :)

Scratch MediaWiki extension

First version of MediaWiki Scratch-extension is ready - http://194.85.163.158/mw_patarak/index.php/Scratch_extension

Anybody interesting?
Patarakin (talk | contribs) 10:32, December 18, 2010

What's this thing about? :/ Probably some advanced thing that I wouldn't understand :P
Oh, in the Scratch Wiki people sign their posts with four tildes (~~~~) - that way we can know who you are and when you posted. :) I added your signature for you.
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 21:38, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
I'm kinda confused, but it seems to be a MediaWiki that allows one to embed Scratch Projects into it, by using the code <scratch script="author/id"/>
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 08:11, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Really? That would be so cool :D :D :D
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 08:40, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Yes, that is a question to this ScratchWiki administrators. If Scratch community is interesting to add this feature to http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu - just tell me. --
Patarakin (talk | contribs) 11:24, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Hi, I think we met at the Scratch Conference :) This is a very nice extension, I think we should add it to this wiki. I will look into it after my exams (they end tuesday.) Is it ok for you that I change the plugin a bit? There are some features I would like to add.
JSO (talk | contribs) 12:07, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Yes, we met at Scratch conference. This new extension was build by my friend Yury Katkov and it is available as MediaWiki extension http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Scratch - i think you can ask Yuri or me and tell us what you want for next version of this extension or you can impact to extension with your examples.

Scratch FAQ

We had the discussion at the Mod forum about the Scratch FAQ Forum. It's being reformed a bit; we want to bring back easy of use and structure over there.

It might make sense to move the FAQ to the wiki, that way not only you but others can help keeping them up to date and improve them. The wiki has a small but dedicated number of people actively contributing. In addition, wiki accounts are manually approved to prevent vandalism, something that has worked decently well.

--Andresmh

So, as the FAQ can be 'organic' over here (not just provided by mods or ST) we all agreed it would be good to move it over. Actually, the FAQ forum will still remain because Scratchers can discuss about questions there. Wiki pages can be richly formatted (I think we're adding Scratch projects in the future too but I want them to be clean and not loading on pageload).

There 2 ways we could do this.

(1): We create one big, long Scratch FAQ page and add questions over there. We can't give detailed answers and we'll leave everyone confused :p
(2): We give every FAQuestion its own page so we can give a detailed explenation or several approaches, richly formatted with images and/or example projects. The FAQ would then be listed on a FAQ category page and somewhere in the ToC.

I strongly prefer 2 but I want to leave the choice up to you. If we choose 2, we will probably be linking to the appropriate wiki pages in the first post of most threads in the FAQ forums.

So, first we decide which way we choose and then we have plenty of work to do :p
JSO (talk | contribs) 16:37, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Wow! That's awesome! And I agree with you, I think I prefer the second option. :)
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 17:31, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Sounds Great! It would be awesome if we could integrate the forum and the wiki.
Dazman (talk | contribs) 19:01, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
YES YES YES YES YES TEH WIKI HAZ PWNETH WHEEEEEEEE AND I PREFER THE SECOND OPTION TOOOOOOOOO WOOOOOOOOOOO
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 00:20, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
The second option seems nice :D
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 00:37, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

I have a question... What are we going to categorise all the articles we create from the FAQ under? Will they have a special FAQ category? It's just that most of them seem like tutorials...
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 20:19, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

You're right, most of them are 'tutorials'. Not all of them though.[1] for example isn't a faq at all. Maybe we should just create articles for the FAQ's that fit into tutorials. I think we categorize FAQ articles under tutorials but also in a new FAQ section.
JSO (talk | contribs) 22:16, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
I agree with JSO :3
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 00:13, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
Uhm, as a little clarification, we can start this :D

Community Portal Speedup

I changed something to the Scratch Signatures (you can't see it) to make it a lot faster when posting or editing messages, enjoy ;)
JSO (talk | contribs) 10:08, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

That New Project Number Thing...

On the wiki account creation thing... The new feature that tells you how many projects the person has... Well there's a glitch. If the person has no projects it says they have 1...
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 11:41, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

I know, sorry. I'll fix it sooner or later xD Also I want the number of projects for each user to be cached so it only checks say once every few days. Because this new feature slows the account creation down just like the sigs did for the community portal.
JSO (talk | contribs) 21:04, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
Good spotting WeirdF :O
Oh - when we approve an account, it says that manually creating the account is a temporary issue. Are you planning to make everything automatic? (I like it how it is :P)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 01:28, 24 December 2010 (UTC)
That turned out to be a little less temporary than expected  :p It would be nicer when it does everything automatically but the wiki software has a lot of protection built in and I was having trouble to break through it :)
JSO (talk | contribs) 10:38, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
Is that what you changed with the signatures then? :P
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 03:57, 24 December 2010 (UTC)
Since your asking... :p Before the sig extension asked the Scratch Servers for the correct user picture every time it crossed a new <scratchsig> tag. Now it remembers them while the page is being created. Say you have 50 messages on this page, it will only look your user pic up once now, before it looked it up 50 times xD For the account creation I want it to cache the number of projects for a week or so, not just while the page is loading :)

The News

It probably annoys you that I come on here just long enough to find a mistake and whine about it, but...

December 19, 2010 - lilacfuzz101 as Scratch Curator lilacfuzz101 has been chosen as the forty-third curator on the Front Page. Feel free to congratulate Telemachus on one of his/her projects!

December 5, 2010 - moocow98 as Scratch Curator moocow98 has been chosen as the forty-second curator on the Front Page. Feel free to congratulate Telemachus on one of his/her projects!

"Telemachus" should be replaced with "lilacfuzz101" and "moocow98," respectively. Sorry for being a whiner. :P
Scmb1 (talk | contribs) 17:21, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

No! Don't worry about that! We strive only for perfection, so I don't think anyone dedicated would count this as whining, instead we view it as help. I'll change it right away! :)
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 20:48, 26 December 2010 (UTC)
Don't worry, it's good to get stuff fixed and it's nice when you help with that :P
We're - I'm - so clumsy :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 23:19, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

Perhaps changing the news message to be a bit more respectful

I see the message "Merry Christmas" - as nice as that is, not everybody celebrates Christmas (again, I do, and many of you probably do too, but not everybody celebrates Christmas). For this reason, I think we should change the message to something different for everybody, something more respectful, such as "Happy Holidays", like it says on the front page. This way it works for New Years Eve/Day, Christmas, Chanukah, etc. It's a bit late that I post this suggestion (sorry), but what do you guys think?
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 23:14, 26 December 2010 (UTC)

WOOOOOOOOO LUCARIO LUCARIO LUCARIO YOU'RE NOT DEAD :D :D :D :D :D
I agree - you're right. :P *waits for more opinions*
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 23:22, 26 December 2010 (UTC)
Nice to see you out of your grave ;P
Dx I see your point though.
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 23:33, 26 December 2010 (UTC)
I did think about that, however I disagree... It's just I wanted the Christmas colours, and they don't really work for Happy Holidays... However, this year Hanukkah ended on the 9th December, and that's the biggest besides Christmas... We can easily have a different one for New Years Eve/Day (and I don't really consider them "holidays"). The only holiday I can find anywhere in the world that's actually on 25th December is The Signature of the Constitution of the Republic of China, which is a small holiday for them. If the date had been like 1st - 31st December then maybe I'd agree, but the date does specifically say 25th of December. Maybe we could add other ones for different festivals on different dates?
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 09:02, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
Hmm... to be honest, I'd rather it be Merry Christmas, but Lucario has a good point. :/
But you do too, WeirdF :P
I can't decide now - WeirdF did a good 'speech' :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 11:07, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
Actually, I made up my mind - I'm with WeirdF :D
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 11:09, 27 December 2010 (UTC)
Are we going to have to wait nearly two weeks for Lucario to come on again so he can reply? :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 00:19, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
I see what you mean WeirdF. Perhaps we plainly shouldn't have a holiday message - the one on the Scratch website is arguably enough, so we shouldn't have to have another special one for the wiki readers. What do you guys think?
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 00:43, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
I agree. Or maybe just, "Happy Holidays". Or maybe just for the holidays that everyone celebrates, like Thanksgiving, Halloween, New Years, Fourth of July, etc.
OldWheezerGeezer (talk | contribs) 02:47, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Actually, you have a point Lucario :)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 06:03, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Meh... I don't really mind, I'm not going to pick sides...
WeirdF (talk | contribs) 15:42, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
@OldWheezerGeezer: What makes you say everybody celebrates those holidays? Only people in the U.S. celebrate Fourth of July - Thanksgiving date can vary depending on country, so I think we shouldn't bother with any of them. However, I noticed for Happy New Year they're doing *that* on the forum, as it is more globally, so perhaps we should only do that one. What do you guys think?
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 05:17, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
You're right! Haha I never think things through. I agree. P.S. Congratulations on the first wiki edit of 2011!
OldWheezerGeezer (talk | contribs) 05:50, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
Going along with what you said earlier Lucario, we don't need to put Happy New Year! in the news here if the message's already been done on the main website :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 05:52, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
I meant that I agreed with what Lucario said. Sorry if that was a little unclear
OldWheezerGeezer (talk | contribs) 06:01, 1 January 2011 (UTC)
I wouldn't worry too much about it but if you do, I guess 'happy holidays' is fine :) OldWheezerGeezer, 4th of july is the United States Independence Day (right?), it's only celebrated in the US :) Every country has its own national day. Here in Belgium we don't have thanksgiving either. But I doubt anyone will be offended by "Merry Christmas" :) Remember, everyone can freely contribute so everyone can request an account and ask for their holiday to be added :p
