Do we get started on deleting them? :/

This message in a nutshell: No.
You and Jonathanpb are the nicest people in the whole-wide-world to work with, except for your slight impatience ><. JSO just set up the wiki so there would only be the search box, as he thought it would be easier for new users. However, I told him to change it - so he's working on it. Plus, it's the weekend, so he can get a bunch more things done for us.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:02, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
Sorry... ^_^
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 00:12, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
Sorry about that... :( Should I delete this?
Chrischb (talk | contribs) 07:32, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
No - we'll be archiving stuff; but probably only at the end of the month.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 14:22, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
Hi, please note that the current search button has changed function. It is now the 'Go' button actually. It does show a search page when there is no page with that exact title ;) JSOadmin 17:34, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

When do we make this wiki public, and 'lock' the old one?

Just wondering...
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:04, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

All in a timely manner. Behind the scenes, me and JSO are talking a lot about different things to install and what not, and although it seems like nothing much is happening, believe me, there is. For example, look at the new edit bar - there's lots of stuff done to do that ;). And that makes it easier for you guys to edit.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 14:03, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
Wow! :)
The news section on the wiki's front page says that it's (to be announced) public! :D
(So people have to e-mail the Scratch Team for an account here?)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:01, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Not exactly. We the people at the Scratch Wiki team, prefer not to email Scratchers, as they are just kids, so it's somewhat privacy, and not all kids have emails. So, instead, there will most likely be a thread in the announcements forums sort of like the Become a Curator thread, in which you can request to become a Scratch Wiki user :P. Then, Andres will give them a private notification saying that you were selected, and how to enter the account to the wiki, and stuff :P. I hope that makes sense :P. It's so cool isn't it?
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:18, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
That's so cool! Having a forum topic with private notifications and the Scratch Team and stuff - I'm so honored to have been in the wiki before that. :P I'M SO EXCITED FOR THE WIKI TO BE RELEASED!!! In the first week, we might have over 50 users. :D Tons of people to work with! Plenty of edits on the wiki! Yay!
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 09:48, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
Woah, hold your horses :P. Firstly, we won't necessarily invite 'everybody that asks - we will try not to be picky, but we don't want people with generally bad grammar, or with only a few weeks of experience in Scratch. Also, it takes a while for Andres to send so many invites :P So he'll probably send like, a dozen at a time. But yeah - most likely we will have more than 50 users.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 19:58, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
Oh, stupid me - we have to watch who we invite. :P How about these guidelines for users?
  • Has been on Scratch for at least 6 months
  • Uses good grammar
That's all I can think of. ^_^ Would we have guidelines, or would Andrés just pick people he thinks would be good, or both?
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:53, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Before I mostly reply, I just want to add a quick update from

Andres. The wiki will definitely be released ASAP - just I have to finished writing the advertisements for the Scratch Twitter and Scratch Announcements Forum, along with a long thing about the wiki for the Scratch Blog with history, and my hopes for it, etc. (boy this is big! :D). But, Andres also said, that we're not going to immediately *request* users - rather, we'll wait for the people who really want to join, to request it themselves. That way, we won't be just getting people who are joining "because of the opportunity", and later become inactive. Later after a while, if needed, we will post that people can request invites :).

As far as my main response: Yeah - those are definitely the main guidelines - we don't want to make them very hard, after all. The only other one I might add is to be good at working with others, and being kind :)

Minor Edit?

Whenever I edit a wiki page, I always notice the "Minor Edit? [_]" checkbox. I am never really sure when to check it, or even if it makes a difference at all.

So could you clarify the uses of it? Thanks, ~Shadow_7283 Talk 14:56, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

By checking it, it basically just tells us on Recent Changes that you didn't make any large changes to the article; ex, you just changed minor formatting, or fixed some spelling or grammar. It doesn't technically do anything else really.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 16:35, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Split article: Change/Set () Effect By/To () (block)

Each block deserves it's own article - so this article should be split
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 00:57, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

They're already split - I just forgot to delete the old article. Sorry... ^_^
Deleted the 'share' article... :D
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 06:58, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks :)

Stubborn Bullet

http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/Text-Based_Games_Forum In this article, under the TBG Official Rules bullet, there is an extra bullet after "explains:". It has refused my best attempts to get rid of it. Help please?!-~Shadow_7283 Talk 15:14, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Fixed. :) --mkolpnji 15:17, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
The problem was, because the text about was indented with a colon, than the other bullets should have also been done that way, rather than having two bullets in a row. I hope that helps explain it...
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 15:19, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Hmm... That's weird.
I just edited the article with the colons and fixed it, yet it says you were the one to do the edit.
Did we just happen to edit at the exact same time, resulting in your edit overwriting mine? --mkolpnji 15:20, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Maybe :o - I don't know.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 15:22, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure if the actual new gobo is the logo, and not the 'mascot'. I'll check with bharvey.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 15:24, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

That's a good point. I should have thought of that. -~Shadow_7283

Making the Contents section of the main page a template

Just a thought... should we? :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 12:07, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

I would, and it's not that bad of an idea, but unlike the other sections, the Contents section isn't changing that often unlike the other sections, so it really isn't needed...
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:09, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Got it... :)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 08:08, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

What is this "/example" page?

Look at "Dead-end pages" or "Uncategorized pages" - there's this "/example" page! When I go to the link, it says that the article doesn't exist - if it doesn't, why does it show up in those pages? What is it?
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 08:30, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

I fixed it (deleted it) :). To delete it though, instead of having the URL as /wiki//example, or anything like that, had to do /index.php?title=/example :) Thanks for reporting that - I wouldn't have noticed it otherwise.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:42, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Protecting Archives?

The archives aren't supposed to be edited, so why not protect them? We won't have to worry about anyone editing them...
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 09:27, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Ok! :)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 15:46, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Why is Template:! protected?

Just wondering... after all, Template:!! is practically the same thing and it isn't protected...
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 09:36, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Template:! is protected because it's so simple of a template that there's absolutely nothing to be changed for it, and it's used in so many pages that vandalism would obstruct the wiki a lot. I protected the other one now that you remind me.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 15:45, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Table of Contents

I was starting to remove a lot of Table of Contents from articles that weren't very long, but I wasn't sure where to stop. How long does an article have to be before we include a table of contents? Should we just leave them all? An article that is just over a page long doesn't seem large enough to have one. -~Shadow_7283 Talk 15:37, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

I think we should just leave them. The odds are, once they grow, they will forget to remove the tag :P.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:02, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Motor Blocks

I started creating Motor Blocks articles today (by the way, they are pretty poor quality, you may want to edit them). However, I noticed while creating their "Block" templates that they didn't have a category of their own. Should I change them to "Motion Blocks" or work on creating "Motor Blocks"?-~Shadow_7283 Talk 15:46, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Here's another decision which I'm not 100% sure about for the wiki. But I'm going to have to go on the side which says to create a Motor Blocks category and page :). I think that would be best.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:05, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Copyrighted Images

Every time you edit something it screams at you, "Do not submit copyrighted work without permission!," so I was wondering about images. I was thinking about maybe working on the "Play note () for () seconds" block page and I thought it would be cool to make a chart that would help users figure out which note and which duration to put in if they are reading sheet music. If I did that, I would want some way of putting pictures of music on the page, and I would probably want to make the music in Finale. So to the point of my post: would it be against the rules to include an image that was made in a program beside Scratch? If it is, I guess I could just use the paint editor, but it would look really unprofessional. --scmb1(talk) 20:04, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Oh yeah - that copyright thing. It gets on my nerves too. Just ignore it though :P. But yeah - of course, you can post images for just about anything, as long as it's used in the wiki helpfully some way, and it's appropriate :) Nice idea you got there though - that would even help me I bet :)
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:10, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
Sure. Just don't upload images you downloaded off the net using google images or similar ;D JSOadmin 14:33, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
Adding on to JSO's response, it's mainly because on Google Images, it does say "This image is subject to copyright" - so it's we don't want to get in trouble :P
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:27, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
OK. Thanks guys! scmb1(talk) 14:36, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

What does "Purge Article" do?

I accidentally hit it when I was at JSO's (nonexistent) user page... did I do something bad? Dx
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:43, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

It refreshes the page for new changes. Good for updating the website cache.  Vista4563   Talk • Contribs  07:57, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

Tagline

On some wikis, there are taglines. Taglines on MediaWiki, are basically messages that will appear at the top of every page, right below the title. See the RuneScape Wiki for an examples. Just under "RuneScape:About", it says "From the RuneScape Wiki, the wiki for all things RuneScape". So what did you guys think about having the same thing on the Scratch Wiki, except something like "From the Scratch Wiki, made by Scratchers, for Scratchers."
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 01:55, 9 June 2010 (UTC)

That makes it sound like the Programming wiki... :P
Nah, I think I'd rather go without it. :)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 06:39, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
Why do you say it makes it sound like the Scratch Programming Wiki? It doesn't mention "Programming" in it anywhere.
Lucario621 (talk | contribs) 20:04, 9 June 2010 (UTC)
I think it would be best to have a tagline as it would make the wiki more, well, appealing to users. :P --mkolpnji 00:15, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
It makes it sound like a normal wiki... :P
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:36, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Well, I'm okay with whatever... :)
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 07:36, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
I like it. :)

Archive rules

When do we add more to the archives, when do we create another archive page and how many messages should we have here (the Community Portal discussion page) at once?

I suggest twenty messages per archive page - for how many messages to have here at once, I'm not sure.
Jonathanpb (talk | contribs) 09:07, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

I was thinking one per month - but definitely that would be a bit less organized, and I underestimated how many discussions we'd have. We'll wait a little while more until we create the next archive though ;)
